It is surprisingly notable that despite the advent of their latest BB10 operating system, BlackBerry have introduced another BB7 device but this time dropped the "Bold" name normally associated with the 9700 range.

The BlackBerry 9720 features their typical format of landscape style screen combined with classic BlackBerry ergonomically curved physical QWERTY keyboard, with Call, End call, Home and Back operating buttons sandwiched in between and the usual optical trackpad in the middle.

QWERTY keyboard and touchscreen

Because of the physical keyboard which is slightly flatter than usual, similar to the Q5 in fact, you obviously do not get the same amount of screen real estate as you might expect from a typical smartphone of the 21st century.

However the 480x360 pixel 2.8 inch screen sports 214 pixels per inch so you get clear and sharp text and imagery.

The landscape screen is the perfect shape for watching video of course though perhaps not the perfect size, but video playback isn't really the BlackBerry 9720's selling point.

This is a touchscreen device too though BlackBerry veterans might find themselves using the optical trackpad to select just as much as they use the screen.

Easy grip casing

It is a very similar phone in size and feel to the BlackBerry Q5 and is easy to grip because of it's size and because of the rubber textured rear cover and sides.

The 120g weight adds to the solid feeling build quality that has always been a BlackBerry hallmark and even though this is an entry-level model you get the impression you are holding a more expensive handset.

Smooth operating system

The onboard 800Mhz processor coupled with 512Mb RAM may sound small by today's smartphone standards but because BlackBerry's operating system uses far less power than those of Apple or Android it will not be found wanting and you will find this smartphone runs as smooth as silk.

If too many apps are open BlackBerry's BB7 does warn you rather than freezing or crashing the phone. As on the 9320 and 9360 Curve series you can increase the memory size right up to 32MB via a microSD memory card which is hot swappable.

Excellent call quality

Connectivity includes Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and assisted GPS, perfect for sat nav and geotagging and this offers plenty of methods for most users but there is no NFC, although this relatively new technology is unlikely to be of any use to the vast majority of you for a good few years yet.

Meanwhile BlackBerry fans will not be surprised to hear that call quality and clarity is as usual excellent even through the inbuilt speaker whilst battery life is above average for a smartphone, no doubt helped by the reduction in juice required by the smaller screen.

Improved BBM (BlackBerry Messenger)

The same 5 megapixel camera featured on the Curve range is included here and while it won't replace your main digital camera it is a capable unit which presents clear images that you can now share instantly thanks to the new improved BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) app.

An LED flash is included as well as scene modes counted in double figures including an auto mode but there is no autofocus. There are better cameras around on many other devices but why pay hundreds more for something you're only going to take snaps with?

Our summary

Again we are happy to report that is a thoroughly decent BlackBerry smartphone overall.

This is probably the cheapest way you can experience the BlackBerry 'experience' and is perfect for all you texting and messaging addicts out there. If you have ever wanted to try the BlackBerry experience there is no better time to buy.
