Research In Motion (RIM), the Canadian company who became BlackBerry, are staking a lot on the Z10.

The Blackberry Z10 is the company's first full touchscreen smartphone which carries the new BB10 operating system which has been designed from the ground up whilst retaining many of the much-loved features of previous BlackBerry operating systems such as BlackBerry Messenger, their instant messaging service.

We take a look at the BlackBerry Z10 to see if it can compete with other top-end devices such as the iPhone 5s, Samsung Galaxy S4 and Sony Xperia Z1

First appearances are certainly impressive, with a look that is similar to the iPhone.

But unlike the rather slippery glass-clad device from Apple, the BlackBerry Z10 features a soft touch casing and textured rubberised rear cover which makes it comfortable in the hand with little chance of dropping it accidentally.

Even if you do happen to let go you feel it will be capable of surviving a few knocks comfortably.

BlackBerry retain the screen on/off button on the top and the familiar three way volume control is also retained on the right hand side, with the centre section acting as a play/pause button and also operates BlackBerry's voice control system.

On the left you will find micro-USB and HDMI ports while the 3.5mm headphone jack is conveniently situated up top. A microSD card slot sits beneath the battery cover which accepts memory cards up to 32GB to compliment the inbuilt 16GB of memory.

Camera

Above the 4.2 inch HD screen you will find the speaker and front-facing 2 megapixel 720p HD camera for videocalling, complimented with a full 1080p HD 8 megapixel camera at the rear, which also includes an LED flash and stabilization together with a burst mode which takes photos non-stop at the rate of around 3 per second.

The LED flash is better than we have seen on most handsets too offering a decent amount of extra light for those low light shots or your indoor photos.

One of the most intuitive features though is the TimeShift mode. Watch the official BlackBerry video:

The notable screen itself has one of the best screens we have seen for viewing outdoors and is bright and clear even in sunlight.

A 1280 x 768 resolution together with an impressive pixel density of 356 PPI means you get a bright colourful screen with excellent colour clarity.

Connectivity

NFC, Wi-Fi, USB, stereo Bluetooth 4.0 and GPS are also included so you get all the connectivity you are ever likely to need, and an outstanding Navigation app is included too.

Under the glass the BlackBerry Z10 uses a grid system not unlike that seen on the iPhone 5, with the BlackBerry hub available by swiping up and right which instantly shows you everything that is going on within your handset. A simple upward swipe shows up to 8 currently running apps.

All this is kept running by the powerful Qualcomm 1.5GHz dual core processor, and with 2GB of RAM on board the BlackBerry is one of the fastest reacting phones we have seen overall which makes it perfect for web browsing.

Keyboard

You will love the on-screen keyboard which is one of the most comfortable we have used, and when entering a mixed field like a password the numerical field appears automatically above the QWERTY keyboard.

It doesn't sound like much but if you enter a lot of numbers, passwords or account numbers and so on you know it's a bit of a pain to keep switching between alpha and numeric keyboards so it's a thoughtful and admirable touch by BlackBerry and helps to assure you that a lot of thought has gone in to the design of the handset.

Battery

Most people should get through the day in normal use with the 1800mAh battery but it is user-changeable so it takes seconds to swap if you want to carry a spare. Blackberry phones are predominantly used by the business community so not having an inbuilt battery is a useful feature.

Summary

Overall the BlackBerry Z10 is a very capable handset which will delight BlackBerry fans and win over plenty of users from Android and Apple too.

Build quality is as always, "Business Class" and it feels very sturdy and solid in the hand, build quality as always being a very strong suit. If you fancy a change from the usual pack then the Z10 will certainly not disappoint you in any way.
