by Mike Leader

Our LG G2 review discovers if this giant smartphone has anything to tempt you towards the Korean brand. The Nexus 4 is a fantastic handset so hopefully that bodes well for LG but the G2 is taking on the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the superb Sony Xperia Z and HTC One.

Looks aren't everything?

First impressions are of a fairly standard black block of a smartphone but we have always maintained that when you're designing a slab of screen you don't have a lot of options, curved like the Samsung Galaxy S4 or squared off like the Sony Xperia Z1?

There's not much else you can do with a thin case comprising mostly of a screen, unless you innovate with something like the G Flex and it's curved screen, but at first glance the LG G2 looks a lot like the Galaxy S4 in shape.

LG like to do things a little differently and you will notice on closer inspection are the power and volume buttons, which are on the back of the phone. No, that's not a typo - they really are on the back of the phone, just below the camera lens in fact so you won't find any buttons on the sides of the phone at all.

Now to place buttons on the back sounds and looks just plain strange at first, but the reason for this, so we're told, is that it is a more natural place for your fingers to rest.

The slightly raised power button sits between the up/down volume buttons while you tap the screen twice to wake the phone instead of using that power button.

Placing those buttons on the rear does actually work too once you get used to it though we have to say it never quite feels natural, perhaps because it's just not quite what we are used to

You will almost certainly need to remember to clean your fingerprints off the 13 megapixel camera lens before you use the camera, where you have missed the 'up' volume button from time to time. The back cover is plastic but it looks and feels solid, with a carbon fibre look beneath a thick lacquered effect.

Stunning 5.2 inch screen

The screen itself is an enormous and dazzling IPS LCD 5.2 inch affair which stretches right to the edges, with a true Full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 offering up 424 pixels per inch. With class leading sharpness and contrast it is absolutely stunning, there's no other way to describe it.

Being an IPS backlit display it is very bright and colourful and even on the brightest days and at almost any angle you will have no viewing difficulties. It really is superb.

Scratch resistant glass screen

The three android buttons are built into the Gorilla Glass fronted screen which most manufacturers seem to prefer to a physical home button and this also saves space which helps keep the size down. Rounded edges and this space saving design makes it comfortable to hold, unusually for a big phone.

Portable power

Under the hood there is a hugely powerful 2.26 GHz quad core Qualcomm processor and a separate Adreno 330 graphics chip coupled with 2GB of RAM. That's a lot of power in your pocket and you would have paid a lot of money for specs like this on your desktop PC just a few years ago!

It is good to see that LG have thought through the power requirements of this gargantuan of a smartphone and have duly obliged with a huge 3,000mAh lithium polymer battery. This means that despite the size and power of this thing you should get through the day with ease even with fairly heavy use.

Minimal customisation

LG haven't overdone their custom skin on the G2 which will also helps battery life and enhances the natural android experience.

That's not to say they have not included some useful features and we especially like the pop-up phone and text screen which allows you to answer calls or read and reply to texts without leaving your current app screen. It's one of those little extras that you will find genuinely useful in practice.

Back to that camera lens, those rear volume controls act as a shutter button for the 13 megapixel camera although we suspect the up volume button is too close to the lens to use as a shutter button.

But the camera itself is also stunning and quite possibly just edges the amazing Sony Xperia Z1 for outdoor quality in natural daylight. Both pictures and video - HD of course - are razor sharp outdoors, assisted by optical image stabilisation.

Directable microphone

The picture quality does suffer a little indoors in low light with the camera sometimes struggling to focus. This is not unusual amongst smartphones but the LED flash does help when the going gets tough and there are a plethora of features and settings you can tweak to enhance your photos and videos.

We liked the Audio Zoom which allows you to focus the microphone in a certain direction when recording video. It sounds gimmicky but in practice it's another novel feature which works really well.

Impressive connectivity

Connect to anything you like any way you like with the LG G2. You can enjoy Wi-Fi, assisted GPS for sat nav, stereo Bluetooth with Enhanced Data Rate, NFC, MicroSD memory card slot, 3.5mm audio connector, USB and you even get an infra-red TV remote function.

Our summary

This a high end smartphone you may not have considered putting on your wish list initially but you would be wrong not to give it some serious thought.

It comes with an outstanding screen, one of the best out there in fact, likewise the camera - not always an LG strong point in the past - is as good as anything we have seen and you get plenty of power and functionality.

The South Koreans didn't intend this to be second best to the market leaders and they just might have come up with a winner here. We recommend the LG G2 very highly indeed and it's difficult to find anything not to like about it. Recommended.
