Motorola have produced some excellent Android smartphones in recent years but rarely venture into the affordable budget section and are often not given the credit they deserve. That's a shame because the MOTO G is simply sensational.

There are very few, if any, smartphones in the budget range that are truly excellent, especially when it comes to screen quality. We are happy to report that Motorola have produced an exception to that rule here that simply has no competition.

NOW UPDATED for 2014 to include 4G and a memory card slot!

Excellent build quality

Build quality is something that is synonymous with Motorola handsets and over the years we have often though that they have not received the recognition that they sometimes deserve. It might be different this time because this solidly built handset must surely be a huge success for the Americans.

For a change it's a more standard design from Motorola, who often produce some slightly left of centre shapes for their smartphones, but this has a curved casing which is extremely easy to hold with a matte, almost soft touch feel to the back cover. Covers, or shells as Motorola call them, are also replaceable and available in a range of seven colours and at just £9 each. A slightly more expensive flip cover is also available.

We particularly like the dimple housing the firm's logo just beneath the camera. This might just look like a fancy design point but you will find that your finger will naturally rest there, making it particularly useful if like me, you are one of those people who often accidentally places your finger over the camera lens.

It's 143 grams weight adds to the nice solid feel.

5 megapixel camera and HD recording

Cameras have never been a Motorola strong suite on budget handsets but the camera here is an exception to that rule. The 5 megapixel effort here is comprehensive enough, with autofocus, LED flash, geotagging, face detection, panoramic mode and HDR.

You can also enjoy smooth video recording at 720p HD at a rate of 30 frames per second, with stereo sound. You also get a 1.2 megapixel front facing videocalling camera.

That's admirable at this price point and we particularly like the fact that you can touch the screen anywhere to take your picture. Pictures are bright and clear, and low light performance is better than average too.

However there is one particular feature that wowed us - you can record a section of your movie in slow motion against a background of normal speed, such as a slo-mo shot of a dog jumping. It works very well too and we are hugely impressed.

Absolutely superb screen

The MOTO G's crowning jewel though has to be it's Gorilla Glass screen. First of all you get a very large 4.5 inch screen, which of course will offer average performance like most sub-premium handsets. WRONG! To get a 4.5 inch screen at this price point is impressive enough, but that it's an IPD LCD screen as seen on the Samsung Galaxy S4 for example, was totally unexpected.

This type of screen offers a brighter, more vivid viewing experience and is easier to see in sunlight, and better to view at more acute angles.

If that isn't enough for you, the 720 x 1280 resolution offers 326 pixels per inch, which in plain English is THE SAME AS THE iPhone 5s! In fact we think the screen is BETTER than that on the latest iPhone and that's nothing short of incredible on a budget handset.

Quad core processor and 50 GB free memory

Motorola are not finished yet. They have included a 1.2 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and 1GB of RAM in the mix which will keep the MOTO G ticking along nicely. The only slight tinge of disappointment with the original was the lack of a memory card slot, but the 2014 version has been updated to include a card slot and 4G LTE connectivity.

You still get the 50 GB of Google Drive storage offered with the original version too, which is on top of the standard 15GB, and this is free for two years so you will not be left wanting for storage space.

Outstanding connectivity

Connectivity includes Wi-Fi with Wi-Fi Hotspot, stereo Bluetooth and assisted GPS for sat nav including support for Russia's GLONASS system> Motorola continue to amaze too with the announcement that this Android v4.3 device is upgradeable to the latest version of the operating system, v.4.4 KitKat.

There's no NFC or DLNA here but most of you won't miss it. You do get an FM radio with RDS, a long lasting 2070 mAh battery which will easily last the day and then some in normal use, although it's not removable unfortunately. You also get dual microphones for noise cancellation in noisy environments, traditionally a Motorola strong point.

Our summary

Quite simply, Motorola have put together a stunning package here and it's admirable that they are not asking more for this superb android smartphone. It's well built, well featured and has a quite brilliant screen. The camera is a little average in terms of picture quality but has a host of excellent features.

It's impossible not to like this smartphone and now it includes a memory card slot and 4G it perfects a phone that was virtually perfect to begin with.

This is easily the most highly recommended phone we have ever had at this price point, and it is quite simply the best phone you can buy for the money. Absolutely outstanding.
