by Mike Leader

Like the Q5, the BlackBerry Q5 is unique among smartphones in that it incorporates a slightly flatter version of the famous physical QWERTY keyboard beneath the screen which has a comfortable feel and clicks reassuringly positively in use.

However the absence of the touch pad seen on previous BlackBerry models is your biggest clue that this is running the new touchscreen optimised BB10 operating system.

Touchscreen

As you would expect, because of the physical keyboard the touchscreen is smaller than your average full screen smartphone - in fact it is an exact square offering 720 x 720 pixels.

This HD screen sits comfortably at 3.1 inches and as ever is very easy to use even if you may initially miss the drop down from a 4 inch or larger screen. It's not ideal for video playback and the landscape mode seems somewhat pointless but then that's not why you buy a BlackBerry.

Performance

In terms of build quality, the Q5 has an all plastic casing but it feels as solid as every phone that has ever been produced by the Canadian manufacturers.

Perhaps surprisingly, performance is outstanding for a mid priced handset thanks to the dual core 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor coupled with a generous 2GB of RAM.

Since BlackBerry's super smooth OS is typically less demanding than Android or Apple's iOS this really is a pocket powerhouse.

There is no noticeable slowdown from the smaller processor and the only other concession appears to be the camera which is 5 megapixels against the Q10's 8 megapixel offering.

The same outstanding 720p HD screen as displayed on the Q10 features here and strangely has considerably better battery life than the full screen Z10, not because the smaller screen uses less power - although it does - but because the 2180mAh battery is actually larger than the Z10's 1800mAh offering.

It's a strange twist but it does at least mean that you will get a good day's use from this smartphone with power to spare, and the handset seems to use very little power on standby too which is a refreshing change for a smartphone. Just as well as it is not removable.

BlackBerry Market

A lot is made of the fact that BlackBerry have far less apps than the major markets like Android or Apple's iOS but there are still well over 130,000 and the sensible ones amongst you will easily realise that this is way, way more than you are ever going to need in the real world. You could spend the rest of your life searching them and never get through them all!

The 5 megapixel camera is excellent too, and includes autofocus, LED flash and face detection and the TimeShift feature seen on other BB10 BlackBerries is also present.

This takes a series of pictures almost instantly and allows you to scroll back or forwards by milliseconds to get the perfect shot. Video recording is full 1080p HD at 30 frames per second and the 2 megapixel front facing camera also records HD video at 720p.

Our summary

The BlackBerry Q5 is a deliberate attempt to produce a cheaper version of the expensive Q10 but apart from the lower resolution camera and plastic casing, which does give a slightly cheaper feel, it is still extremely rugged and we find it difficult to fault.

If the QWERTY keyboard style phone is for you and you feel you can not stretch to the price of the Premium Q10 handset then we thoroughly recommend you seriously consider the Q5.
