by Mike Leader

Despite their well publicised problems BlackBerry continue to turn out some superb handsets and the Z30 is no exception.

Obvious quality

Blackberries have always had excellent build quality and the same is apparent here immediately, with the glass-woven plastic rear panel looking very much like carbon fibre.

This type of panel is much stronger and doesn't flex as much, yet Blackberry have also given it a soft touch feel which isn't apparent when you look at it. All clever stuff.

Strong casing

The matte silver surround adds a touch of class while the thickness of 9.4mm also adds to the strong feel of this handset, as does the not inconsiderable 170 gram heft.

From the front there is a fair amount of bezel above and beneath the screen, especially at the bottom where the fairly large BlackBerry logo sits above a contrasting silver panel.

The full glass front also has a neat finish and actually curves around the edges, adding to the overall feeling that you are getting a classy smartphone

The manufacturers have clearly had no intention to try to cram everything into a wafer thin casing here.

The resulting depth of around 10mm always feels just about right in the hand to us, while the weight of this phone offers you a reassuringly unmistakeable feel of premium build quality.

5 inch Super AMOLED screen

BlackBerry have used the same Super AMOLED technology seen in the Samsung Galaxy S5 for the wonderful 5 inch screen on the Z30, and although the resolution is only 293 pixels per inch against the Samsung's 432, it's worth noting that this handset costs a couple of hundred pounds less.

A density of around 300 upwards is fast approaching the point where it's impossible for the human eye to detect individual pixels anyway so don't be put off by the numbers - the only place you will be able to spot any difference is on a spec sheet.

Even side by side it is difficult to tell until you get to the point where text is almost too small to read anyway. It is an excellent screen in every respect with crisp, bright colours and pin sharp text.

Super signal strength

One thing we particularly think worthy of mention is the attention paid to the antenna by BlackBerry.

Dubbed the Paratek Antenna, it has been specially designed to ensure a signal can be obtained even in areas of low signal strength and you will find it works better in the respect than just about any other phone out there.

This is especially welcome in the formative years of 4G where signal masts are not as prevalent as their 3G equivalents, though of course if your travels take you out of a 4G area the phone automatically switches to 3G and even 2G if necessary with no loss of signal.

Android apps

It is also well documented that BlackBerry do not have as many apps as any other platform but we have always thought it is a stupid argument.

The solid fact remains that you will still find over 150,000 apps and if you spend every minute of the rest of your life evaluating them all, you would still never get through them all. Just how many do you need?

It is also worth considering that Android apps also run on BlackBerries - yes that's right Android runs on BlackBerry.

The new BB10.3 update to the operating system will ensure that an current bugs are smoothed out so they will run smoothly, so with Android plus BlackBerry apps you now in fact have a bigger choice than any other platform!

Your money is safe!

A lot has been documented about BlackBerry's "demise" but the company has been restructured and the Z30 is one of a new range of exciting products the Canadian firm hope to entice you with in the coming months.

What happens if the worst should happen and they are no longer around if your phone breaks down?

Well you need not worry because the seller, not the manufacturer, is liable for any claims in the UK so in the unlikely event that your Z30 should need replacing it would be replaced with another handset of similar value.

Clear shots and HD video from the 8 megapixel camera

BlackBerry cameras have always been highly rated here at 1st Mobile UK and this is no exception in good daylight, although you will find it harder to get decent shots as the light fades as is the case with any camera.

Bright shots with strong colours, especially outdoors are premium quality here. Video can be recorded in both levels of HD, 720p or 1080p, with image stabilisation available and again your mini movies will be sharp and bright.

strong performing Hub and Messenger

BlackBerry's famous Messenger app is still the bet out there for making instant video calls and photos, videos and documents can also be shared instantly and securely. This means that two users on other sides of the world can view and discuss a document at the same time, for example.

But the BlackBerry Hub is just brilliant. The lock screen now includes notifications from your chosen services. You are still notified by the famous flashing red light of course that is a BlackBerry hallmark, but now you do not have to unlock your screen to see those notifications.

The new Priority Hub is a feature of the new Hub and filters out the most important conversations, and it works extremely well too.

4 tiles cover the screen and allow you to see, for example, Facebook Twitter, Gmail and Pinterest apps at the same time and it learns who you contact the most and which are the most important. The best thing about it is, it just works.

Powerful performance

A dual core Krait processor powers the Z30 running at 1.7 GHz and backed up with 2 GB of RAM. This might seem a little lower than some of the top flagship models out there but because BlackBerry's operating system uses far less resources than most other operating systems.

This is more than enough power to keep the handset speeding through applications and tasks instantly with no sign of lag whatsoever, even when we had over 12 apps open.

Battery life is also terrific. We were unable to use it up during a prolonged days use, but this is perhaps just as well as the battery is not swappable.

Great sound, great connectivity

With Wi-Fi direct and Wi-Fi hotspot on board together with Stereo Bluetooth, assisted GPS with access to the Russian GLONASS system, NFC for contactless payments and transferring calls by touch everything you need and more is found here.

There is even a stereo FM radio which you can play via Bluetooth, through a headset via the 3.5mm headphone socket or through the built in stereo speakers which produce sound which is probably only second to the HTC One M8. Call clarity is excellent too.

Our summary

Reviews often seem to slate BlackBerries simply because they are a little different, don't quite have as many apps - only 130,000 plus to choose from as if you really, really need any more, or because the company has encountered a few problems in recent years. So what?

The truth is that most reviewers simply cannot bring themselves to admit that, like the Z10, Q5 and Q10, BlackBerry are STILL producing some of the very best phones you can get your hands on.

The simple fact is that the BlackBerry Z30 is simply superb and we love it.

Should BlackBerry ever cease to be it will be a very sad day for the mobile phone world as they are the one company who refuse to join the "me too" brigade, and their products are all the better for it.
