The first thing you will notice about the HTC Desire 601 is that the design comes straight from the HTC One, with the commanding frame shape and dual speakers above and beneath the screen

However the casing is polycarbonate rather than the more luxurious metal casing of the One but it looks and feels solid enough. You will find it's easier to hold too, with the matte rubberised coating giving a more comfortable feel as well as allowing you to hold it more safely.

It is interesting to note the lack of a Menu button which is unusual. There are only two buttons here, Home and Back, and where a menu is required you can access it by prodding the Home button twice.

These buttons are touch sensitive and sit beneath the screen either side of the HTC logo.

4.5 inch Gorilla Glass covered screen

The screen itself is a 4.5 inch multitouch screen covered by Gorilla Glass, but the pixel density of 245 pixels per inch is of a little lower resolution than many phones at this price range and also doesn't have the superior bright and clear appearance that the latest AMOLED and IPS screens offer.

It is a good screen which will still impress however, with movies, text and internet viewing look perfectly fine with strong blacks, but it does make the Desire 601 appear perhaps a little lacking.

Like all HTC Android handsets you do at least have the benefit of the HTC Sense user interface. This is the excellent customisation of the operating system by the Taiwanese manufacturers. BlinkFeed is included here too.

This is a live visual newsreel of sorts which groups together latest news and social media messages on customisable tiles, for which a full screen has been reserved. You can disable this completely if it is not to your taste.

Impressive camera

A 5 megapixel camera is the choice here and despite more and more smartphones adding more and more megapixels to their cameras, this is absolutely fine.

Most people only use their smartphone cameras as a point and shoot snapshot camera anyway and it suits the job perfectly, ably assisted with autofocus together with face and smile detection.

HTC describe this as an "advanced" camera and it includes features such as clustering, which takes photos less than a second apart and groups them together to produce an action sequence.

Geotagging is also included so you can record the location to your shots using GPS as you take them.

Strong camera customisation

The more adventurous of you do get plenty of customisable options too, and there are many more customisation options in android's marketplace, Google Play.

The LED flash enables you to take excellent pictures in low light which is a welcome change. The vast majority of phone mounted cameras do not do a particularly good job in low light but the Desire 601 seems to be the exception to the rule.

Video can be recorded at Full HD 1080p at 30 frames per second though of course you will need a Full HD TV, laptop or tablet to view your home movies in 1080p. However they will look perfectly fine on the Desire's screen.

Excellent high-end sound

One major plus on the Desire 601 is the inclusion of the same sound engine that powers the HTC One. That means top quality stereo sound with excellent clarity from the built in dual speakers and amplifier.

The amount of sound these speakers pump out relative to their size almost defies logic. It really is outstanding.

Many people no doubt purchased the HTC One because of the sound quality so if that is what is most important to you, you can now save yourself a packet as this handset retails at around half the price.

An FM radio is also on board so you can take advantage of that superb stereo sound straight out of the box.

Strong connectivity suite

This is a 4G handset which may sway a good number of you, although obviously you will have to be in a 4G coverage area to take advantage of the fast download speeds that 4G offers.

A dual core 1.4 GHz is powerful enough to keep things running smoothly, on board and streaming movies play perfectly. Wi-Fi includes Direct and Hotspot, while DLNA allows you to play your movies and music an a nearby device such as a smart TV without cables.

Assisted GPS is on board for geotagging and sat nav. There is no NFC for contactless payments but that won't be a deal breaker for most of you.

Our summary

HTC are renowned for producing well built quality products at all price ranges and the Desire 601 is no exception.

The slightly industrial design will not win everybody's affection but should tempt many of those who do not want to fork out the large wad of cash required to secure the firm's flagship HTC One M8.

However while there is nothing really wrong with the screen there are a good choice of other handsets available with better screens so that may be something to think about if a hi-res screen is important to you.

All things considered it is a good well specified and reasonably priced package which will satisfy every buyer
