HTC One Mini 2 review, ratings and latest UK deals and offers

The HTC One Mini wasn't quite the mini version of the Taiwanese manufacturer's flagship offering we wanted, so have HTC learned by that and given us the 'better' we expect with the Mini 2?

To begin with, in keeping with the fact that it is a cheaper as well as a smaller version, the casing immediately gives you clues that it's not quite going to match the HTC One M8 in terms of build quality even if it looks the part.

Premium feel aluminium panel

Sure, the rear panel is aluminium and instantly looks like a smaller version of the M8. But on closer inspection you will see that this is not a one-piece metal casing, but is broken up around the sides with a strip of plastic.

The rear panel itself is also made of separate panels rather than being carved from a single piece of metal. Despite this is has to be said though that it still looks superb and feels like a premium device.

The full size Samsung Galaxy S5 has a plastic case so HTC manage to trump that even with a midrange handset. So far so good then.

4.5 inch glass covered screen

The next thing to consider is the screen as it is this you will be looking at the most, at least when it's in use. Again this a lower resolution that the HTC One M8, with the 4.5 inches of Gorilla Glass covered display offering a pixel count of 720 x 1280.

This gives you a pixel density of 326 pixels per inch, and while this is well down on the flagship's number of 441 PPI it is still a fantastic screen

In the real world it is worth noting that anything above 300 PPI is going to a view where individual pixels are pretty much at the point where your naked eye cannot detect them, and this display is on a par with the iPhone 5c.

So if you can get beyond the numbers, the screen is superb and is not going to disappoint you in any way

Superior stereo sound

Sound quality is again prevalent here, and the Mini 2 does not disappoint with the same BoomSound engine featured as in it's larger counterpart. The built in front facing stereo speakers are a little smaller.

Consequently the sound is not quite as loud, but they still offer a sound more superior than just about everything out there. You will enjoy the excellent quality and clarity, even from the built in FM radio

13 megapixel camera with face detection

The Dual Ultrapixel camera of the M8 stays on the M8, it's a more conventional 13 megapixel camera seen here and the dual flash makes way for a single one, but that's still as high a resolution as at least anything else in it's class is offering.

We tend to feel that HTC's cameras produce shots that are slightly leaning towards the paler side of normal but are more natural looking, where a lot of cameras seem to produce more vivid photos which do not always look natural.

Overall we like the shots produced, but if there is one criticism it is that the autofocus seems a touch slower than average. Geotagging and face/smile detection are included as is Full 1080p HD video recording on both cameras, including the front facing 5 megapixel video calling camera.

Ample if not prodigious power

Power is provided by a Qualcomm quad core 1.2 GHz processor and 1GB of RAM. we would have liked to see a little more RAM memory.

In practice we did not experience any lag with games or videos, or indeed with any apps, and normal day to day operation was extremely quick with the phone switching between apps instantaneously

Memory comes in one size on this 4G handset - 16GB. That's easily enough for most of us, and you can add a memory card of any size right up to 128GB

Ultra quick downloads with dual band Wi-Fi

With dual-band Wi-Fi together with Wi-Fi Hotspot you will not be left wanting for places to connect to even if you are outside a 3G or 4G area, and just about everything else is included with GPS, DLNA, stereo Bluetooth and NFC.

However there is no Infra Red port so you can't use this one as TV remote control as you can with the One M8

Our summary

If you want a flagship model but cannot justify the asking price for HTC's flagship for your needs then we can certainly recommend the HTC One Mini 2. It is a fine handset in it's own right and should be considered as such, rather than a substitute for the real thing.

Remember this is no mini - it is a phone with a screen that is larger than the iPhone 5s, and carries the same pixel density so you are not buying any second rate handset here.

HTC have this time made a brilliant job of producing a smaller 'One' with a feature set and build quality that will ensure enjoyment for all those who choose this android smartphone

This is a timely post, as I spent some time earlier today trying to find any information on forthcoming Android handsets. I really couldn’t find anything more recent than February, however. Is there any information about when & what Android handsets may be forthcoming?
