Our HTC One X review gives you the low down on HTC’s latest upmarket android smartphone.

This is a quad core beast of a phone with a 4.7 inch screen and, fast becoming a regular feature of all HTC handsets, a full glass screen which stretches from top to bottom of the casing. The slightly contoured front compliments the rear of the handset which gently curves in from the edges and is finished with a matt black coating which you will find is very easy to hold. The slightly raised bevel around the camera helps protect the back from scratches when placed on a table. At just under 9mm thin is is easy on the pocket too and the 133 gram weight gives it a solid feel without being too heavy.

4.7 inch screen

That 4.7 inch screen sits beneath Corning Gorilla Glass 2 which is extremely strong whilst being light and thin at the same time. The 720p HD display with 1280×720 resolution shows colour and contrast in what we believe to be a far more true to life form than the Samsung Galaxy S3 for example, which some people tend to find a little too vivid and overbearing with the brightness up full. We think you will find the rich tones of the HTC One X to be far more lifelike.

8 megapixel camera

HTC have also included an 8 megapixel camera and the first thing you will notice is how quick it fires up. In under a second you are ready to snap away. Pictures are sharp and colourful and we like HTC’s ImageSense application which helps improve the quality of your shots in low light and it really works. An LED flash is also included when you need a little extra help, and there’s also a burst mode for continuous shooting. This is as good a camera as we have seen on any smartphone, no doubt helped by a class leading f/2.0 aperture. We also like the inclusion of Dropbox, a file sharing app with which you can instantly store and share your phots, music or any other files an open them in any browser anywhere in the world.

Dropbox is free and is included in our Top 100 Android apps. Sign up to our mailing list and grab your FREE copy today.

HD video recording

Video recording in HD is also a feature and you will particularly appreciate the ability to capture still photos from your videos. There is no lag whatsoever when watching HD movies, or doing anything else for that matter thanks to that powerful NVIDIA® Tegra 3 Mobile Processor. There is no doubt that this phone is extremely fast regardless of the task you throw at it.

Sense UI user interface

The Sense UI interface that is HTC’s tweak to the stock android operating system is one of the few upgrades around that we believe actually enhances the android experience rather than interfering with it and it suits the HTC One X just fine. If you don’t like it you can customise it completely. You get up to seven home screen and customisable lock screens too, on which you can add widgets for the time, weather, photos, music player or just about anything else. Try doing all that with an iPhone 4GS!

Excellent Beats Audio sound

Sound is excellent too thanks to the inclusion of Beats Audio, which enhances your aural experience for a more natural and authentic sound whether you are listening to your music collection or the built-in stereo FM radio, or your favourite movie. This works particularly well through headphones. There is a 3.5mm headphone jack on the top of the phone so you can use your favourite headset or use the set included in the box, the quality of which is excellent which makes a refreshing change for an included ‘freebie’. Stereo Bluetooth also features so you can also use a cordless headset or stream your music to bluetooth speakers.

Our summary

Overall the HTC One X is a mid-to-top range android smartphone with a price tag to match of course but if like us you are a firm believer in “you get what you pay for” then this quality offering from the Taiwanese manufacturers should be very close to the top of your wish list
