This new smaller and cheaper version of the LG G3 isn't just cheaper in terms of price, but in terms of specification too.

It looks pretty much the same as the G3 but is not quite as tall, with a half inch smaller screen at 5 inches. And it's the screen that is the issue here.

5 inch HD screen

We have probably been spoilt with just about every flagship handset sporting at least a Full HD screen on a display of 5 inches or more, so the 720p HD screen is a slight disappointment on the G3 S.

Most people using a phone of this size will be used to Full HD display of typically 1080 x 1920 pixels, with the Nokia Lumia 930 for example offering 441 pixels per inch, and Android phone with a similar screen size offering the same 1080p HD experience.

But the G3 S unfortunately only offers up 294 PPI and it shows. That's not all. If you are still expecting an otherwise similar phone to the G3 then it ends with the looks.

Power and memory lacking too

For example, that screen isn't protected by Corning Gorilla Glass. You can use the G3 just about anywhere in the world with at least six 4G LTE wavebands available, but the G3 S only has three. There is no Dolby sound enhancement. There is only 8GB of internal memory and 1 GB of RAM.

You only get a 1.2 GHz processor instead of a 2.5 GHz one, and it shows signs of lag when pushed hard. It would - that's a relatively small processor and low amount of RAM these days for a 5 inch screen, though it will be fine for general day to day use.

8 megapixel camera with laser focusing

The camera drops down to 8 megapixels too, although you do get the rapid operating laser focusing technology but as far as we can see that's where the comparisons end. However that technology does ensure lightning fast focusing and crystal clear shots. There is no doubting the overall excellent quality of the camera.

However the dual LED flash is replaced with a single one, and the front facing camera drops from 2.1 to 1.3 megapixels so you lose Full HD recording capability on that, while simultaneous video and image recording on the main camera have also disappeared.

Good connectivity features

Everything else you might expect is present, such as GPS, NFC, stereo Bluetooth, Wi-Fi with Wi-Fi Direct and Wi-Fi Hotspot but DLNA has gone.

Maybe it is unfair to compare it with it's Quad HD brother, as the price point probably reflects what you get, and don't get, and the screen is probably on a par with the a href="http://1stmobile.co.uk/?p=6749" title="Samsung Galaxy Alpha" target="_blank">Samsung Galaxy Alpha which packs in a few more pixels, but doesn't look as bright and sharp as the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact.

That has 25 more pixels per inch on a smaller, 4.6 inch screen and looks all the better for it.

Our summary

We're used to seeing a higher pixel count and thus a considerably sharper display on a screen this big, and while Apple normally lag behind in resolution, even the iPhone 6 is considerably sharper, albeit for at least two and a half times the price.

That the majority of this review centres around that display tells it's own story - it's just too big for anything less than Full HD and in this case we think it could be a deal breaker.

The camera is still excellent, that's the major plus here but there is little else here to recommend it. The phone is also lacking slightly in power when pushed which is the other major issue.

Sometimes it feels almost like buying a luxury car and having the insides stripped out for a road rally, except it's not that quick either. Our advice would be to pay a little more because there a lot of considerably better handsets out there.
