First impressions count so it looks as though LG are on to a winner with the stylish L70.

The unibody style has a premium look to the design with the chrome frame surrounding and contrasting the black body, while the edge to edge screen shows that this is a well thought out design which makes the most of available space.

This keeps the width down, making it easier for you to hold. The rear panel also has a chrome ring around the camera lens, adding to the classy touch and you will like the soft touch, slightly textured feel and curved edges which make it extremely easy to grip.

Large, bright screen

The large 4.5 inch True IPS, Gorilla Glass covered screen is excellent. Colours are rich and bright without being overly vivid, and the IPS format means that it is easy to see in bright sunlight and at wide viewing angles.

The resolution won't pop your eyes out at 800 x 480 pixels, but it's par for the course at this price point. It is one of the better screens around and an improvement on the already-decent screen on the smaller LG L40.

Satisfactory power

The 1.2 GHz dual core processor is more than ample for everyday use on a midrange handset, and the latest version of Google's Android operating system (v4.4.2 Kit Kat) makes much better use of the resources.

This ensures that the phone operates smoothly and you will not experience any lag unless you have dozens of programs open at the same time.

5 MP camera with strong features

A 5 megapixel camera features here and it is here that a slight hint of a delay was noticed. The camera is quick to focus, and includes a superb multifocus mode, but the shutter wasn't the quickest we have ever seen if we are being picky.

Geotagging, touch to focus, face detection and panorama all feature here as does video recording. Sadly though we in the UK are suckered into 5 megapixels while some parts of the world get 8 megapixels.

Impressive additional features

Where LG do score highly with the L70 is on some of the novel extra features you get, including the Knock Code which allows you to unlock the phone by tapping your code onto the screen, while the KnockON feature wakes up the phone by tapping the screen twice if the phone is unlocked.

We also like the Plug and Pop feature, which automatically shows icons for whatever you have plugged in, so if you plug in your headphone socket it will show icons for your music and video players for example. Likewise a similar effect is seen when you plug in the USB cable.

Capture Plus is another great feature which lets you capture a whole web page easily rather than just the section you see on screen, and Clip Tray lets you copy sections of the screen and display them on a pop-up menu or use when you need them - great for copying sections of text or photos.

Our summary

LG have done a good job of bring a new handset to the midrange market that is different enough to stand out from the crowd. The LG L70 looks great and has some interesting features, while it's overall performance will delight you.

As ever we wished the screen resolution was a little higher but we are probably spoilt from looking at premium flagship handsets on a regular basis. If you don't want to part with more than two weeks' average wages for your smartphone then the L70 should be given some serious thought. We like it. We like it a lot.
