An almost impudent feature set and performance are enough to raise a few eyebrows. A very strong performer for a budget handset

HTC's Desire 610 is a mid range smartphone aimed at those who want a more affordable option to the HTC One M8 and an alternative to the HTC One Mini. There is no getting away from the fact that this handset is aimed at those of you who like the appeal of the M8, but not the price tag. The Desire 610 looks almost identical, with the same style casing, the same width and depth give or take a fraction, and only 3 mm smaller than HTC's flagship handset.

Almost patriotic casing!

Produced in red, white and blue you would be forgiven for thinking it was produced especially for us Brits, but we don't get the red version unfortunately. The various colours compared against the metallic hue of the M8 however gives away it's plastic casing, which with the screen off is the only real visual difference. You will even find the BoomSound stereo speakers above and below the screen are in situ.

Large screen, compromised resolution

Turn the screen on and the size becomes apparent, 4.7 inches making it 0.3 of an inch smaller. The biggest difference though is in the resolution, which at 234 pixels per inch is a lot less than the 441 PPI of it's stablemate, this being the main trade off for a phone that costs half the price.

This is quite a large screen for the resolution and while it will not be a deal breaker for you if you are looking for something at this price point, it obviously doesn't compare with any of the top end handsets and though it's difficult to get away from the fact on a lookalike model, it isn't really a fair comparison.

Top quality screens are what make premium handsets premium prices, but low resolutions don't really suit larger screens. The quality is still there, it's not a bad screen my any means but it's almost like watching a non-HD channel on a HD television.

Fantastic 8 megapixel camera

The onboard 8 megapixel camera is one of HTC's positives. Their cameras have always been excellent and this is no exception, producing superb results even in low light. The feature list includes LED flash, auto focus, touch to focus, geotagging and HDR for improved photos against strong backlit subjects.

If that is not enough for you, single snapshot images can be taken while recording Full HD 1080p video simultaneously. A forward facing 1.3 megapixel videocalling camera for your selfies and Skype calls also features, and records video in 720p HD.

Music to your ears, in many ways

Music lovers are well catered for. The aforementioned BoomSound stereo speakers are the same ones found on the One M8 while the latest version 4 of stereo Bluetooth is also available for those who wish to listen through their own choice of speakers.

A 3.5mm headphone jack is also available if you prefer to use a corded headset to listen to your own tracks or the built in stereo FM radio, which features RDS.

Various ways to stay in touch

A plethora of options will help keep you connected wherever you are, with Wi-Fi features such as direct and Hotspot, DLNA for pushing your music, videos or photos to a device such as a Smart TV, NFC for contactless payments, and assisted GPS for sat nav.

This is all powered along with a 1.2 GHz Qualcomm quad core processor coupled with 1GB of RAM which is more than ample power for strong day to day use.

Good storage options

8 GB of onboard memory isn't taken up too much by the latest version of Android, version 4.4.2 'KitKat' or HTC's Sense user interface which includes their brilliant customisable BlinkFeed app which offers you live feeds of latest news, tweets, messages or anything else you might like on your home screen.

You can add a microSD memory card via a very welcome memory card slot, which takes cards right up to 128 GB.

Our summary

High-Tech Computers, the company you now know as HTC, were credited for manufacturing the world's first Android smartphone. They have now grown to become of the world's top smartphone manufacturers and with handsets like this it is easy to see why.

The HTC Desire 610 has almost all the features of any top end smartphone, including a very decent camera.

There is no getting away from the fact that the screen does carry a slightly low resolution by today's standards and that's where the savings have been made, along with the plastic casing which, while colourful, doesn't have the classy look of the HTC One M8.

However in it's own right this is an excellent smartphone and another quality handset from HTC.
