This is an affordable Android handset which isn't going to win any style awards with a rather plain looking grey-black casing and overall uneventful, almost military look. However it is a nice size which feels just right in the hand and the depth of just under 10mm feels helps with grip.

Solid and sturdy build

As you would expect from anything other than a top end handset, the body is plastic but has a solid and sturdy feel and gives you the impression it will survive a few of the hard knocks that come as part of the often rough and tumble life of a mobile phone, especially in a youngsters hands.

This could be important as the price point means it is where it is likely to find itself. The 150 gram weight is a touch on the heavy side for a phone of this size but helps to add to the feeling of solidity.

Standout screen size

What does stand out for the price is it's 4.5 inch screen size. This is a real bonus on a mobile phone at the lower end of the market, with very little else around with a larger than 4 inch screen.

Notably, because Huawei use an IPS screen instead of the usual TFT type used on budget handsets it guarantees a good colour range and will be easier to view in bright sunlight, although that said it isn't the brightest screen we have seen and it is quite reflective too.

The resolution isn't going to please the purist either at just 854 a 480 pixels, offering a pixel density of 218 pixels per inch. On a four inch screen this is acceptable but the extra screen size means it does begin to suffer a little as text starts to look a little fuzzy.

Perfect for browsing the world wide web

There is a decent amount of power on board with a 1.2GHz dual core processor coupled with 512MB of RAM and this is fine for browsing the internet with generally snappy performance throughout. However, larger, more powerful games will find it struggling and some of the more memory-heavy apps do take a fraction longer to load.

That said, you are obviously not going to get the same fluid performance as you would find on flagship smartphones such as the Samsung Galaxy S5 or the LG G3.

Excellent 5 megapixel camera

The standard of smartphone cameras across the board is generally very good these days and while it is difficult to find a bad one, few at this price level can be classed as excellent.

The 5 megapixel camera on the Ascend G510 is the exception to the rule though, with sharp and clear shots throughout and fine low light performance thanks to the built in LED flash.

The only issue here is that the screen doesn't show off the sharpness and clarity of the photos well enough, but transferred to a decent screen or into glossy photo prints shows how good the camera actually is.

A front facing camera is also included but at 0.3 megapixels you are not likely to consider it a prime feature of the phone, more a matter of it's there if you need it.

720p HD video recording is also on board, and alongside the LED flash comes an autofocus lens which is another feature not always seen on the cheaper handsets, although it is not particularly quick to focus.

Memory, music and more

Internal memory space is just 4GB and of course a chunk of this will be taken up by the operating system, but you do get a memory card slot accepting cards up to 32GB which is enough for 7,000 music tracks.

Other features include an FM radio, stereo Bluetooth with Enhanced Data Rate to improve performance when listening to music either through a wired headset of your choice,. utilising the 3.5mm headphone jack, or a pair of Bluetooth headphones.

GPS with assisted start up for satellite navigation and geo-tagging, and of course Wi-Fi is all present and correct too.

Our summary

While it would be a little unfair to criticise the screen with a best in class size, size isn't everything and while it will be sufficient for general everyday use, it isn't really any more inspiring than the look of the rest of the phone.

However this is a solid and dependable handset and if you are not too worried that the screen isn't going to offer you the eye-searing performance as most of the more expensive handsets around, overall the Huawei Ascend G510 offers you surprising value for money with a decent feature set for the relatively little amount of cash you will be asked to part with.
