Just a few years ago, before the advent of budget android smartphones, Samsung made an excellent job of designing a phone with an interface styled like a smartphone.

That phone was the Samsung Tocco Lite and it was a smash hit success for the South Korean manufacturer. So much so that the Samsung Galaxy Ace reviewed here is almost identical in looks.

However the Samsung Galaxy Ace is a true android smartphone with a good sized 3.5 inch screen offering a resolution of 480 x 320 which gives you 156 pixels per inch.

That's decidedly average these days but it is a clear and bright TFT touchscreen and is still proving popular with those moving up from the 3 inch screened Tocco Lite to the android platform, despite the fact that it has now been around for a couple of years, although the Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 is due to replace it soon.

Perhaps the initial attraction is that at a glance it looks very much like the iPhone. But while the screen size puts it in iPhone 5s territory, it can't hope to match the delightful high resolution screen that Apple's device offers.

But then it is less than four times the price of the iPhone 4S yet let's not forget you get full Android functionality. You pays your money...

Build Quality

It's a well built phone too, the all plastic construction feels solid enough and the mottled rear cover makes it easy to grip. The front is flat from top to toe except for the slightly raised Apple-esque physical Home button below the screen.

This rectangle shaped button also wakes up the screen and is surrounded with a chrome effect trim, as is the entire bezel of the phone, giving the Galaxy Ace a classy finish. Either side of this button are the Menu and Back buttons found on every android handset.

These two buttons are illuminated so disappear when not in use and are touch sensitive like the capacitive screen.

It's a slightly unusual arrangement, with Samsung favouring the physical Home button while most manufacturers prefer all three buttons to be of the touch sensitive type. The phone's 11.2 thickness is comfortable to hold and helps show off the iPhone like design even more.

Processor and Storage

The 800 megahertz processor is powerful enough to keep this smartphone chugging along comfortably, but it is worth noting that it runs the older version of android, version 2.3 (known as Gingerbread).

Storage space is somewhat miserly compared what we have become used to with just 153 megabytes on board but there is a MicroSD card slot should you want to add extra, and you probably will.

Camera

The 5 megapixel camera includes auto focus and an LED flash which is good to see at this level and it gives some classy results in good daylight but like most phone cameras quickly begins to falter as the light fails.

The LED flash helps at short range of course and in the role of the snapshot camera that most of you will use it for, you will be generally happy with the results but it won't turn you into David Bailey.

Swype keyboard

Other features include an onscreen keyboard featuring Swype, a system which lets you 'draw' words by sliding your finger from one letter to the next rather than lifting your finger to move from one key to the next as you normally would.

It might sound a little gimmicky and tricky but in reality it actually does work and it is one of those things that once you have used it, especially if you are a one-finger typist, you will wonder how you ever managed without it. Swype is one of our Top 50 Android Apps.

Predictive Text

One aspect of the Samsung Galaxy Ace that many of you will like is the ability to type text messages using the famous predictive text method using the phone keypad instead of the onscreen keyboard.

Many people still prefer this method of typing text messages so it is a worthy inclusion.

Messaging of course includes SMS text and MMS picture messaging as well as email. Facebook and Twitter apps are included too and you can link your contacts easily between the apps.

This is a phone that is clearly designed with younger people in mind who will care more about functionality than specifications and it does what it does very well.

Our summary

With Wi-Fi, GPS and stereo Bluetooth as well as USB connectivity on board this is a well specified smartphone for a model placed at just above entry level.

It is aging a little now and has been replaced by the Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 but is now available for around £100.

This is less than half the original £220 asking price at launch, and represents excellent value for money if you don't want to stump up hundreds of pounds.

The limited onboard memory will limit the number of apps you can install but for the casual user the Samsung Galaxy Ace is an excellent choice.
