Samsung Galaxy Ace 4 review, rating and latest UK deals & offers

The Samsung Galaxy Ace 4 is a likeable budget smartphone that brings 4G and a little extra power to the table over the previous version. But are Samsung asking too much for an entry level handset?

Yes, you've guessed it. The Samsung Galaxy Ace 4 is the 4th version of the budget Android smartphone in the Ace series.

This is a smartphone at the opposite end of the range to the flagship Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note 4 so you're not going to set the world alight with it.

However the main new feature is 4G LTE connectivity for fast data speeds so browsing the internet will be a pleasurable experience with no waiting around for pages to load, no lag when watching YouTube videos and fast downloads.

Acceptable power on board

You will be slightly limited by the 1.2 GHz processor and 1 GB of RAM memory but while some reviewers have ridiculously labelled this as inadequate and a disappointment, for an entry level phone we think is is more than acceptable with many phones offering a lot less.

Obviously you are not going to be able to undertake any heavy graphics work or play large, memory intensive games but for everyday tasks, as a spare or first phone it's perfectly fine and you will not notice any lag in normal everyday use.

4 inch screen not the main attraction

The TFT 4 inch screen is acceptable at this price point but really no more. You won't get the same experience as you would on an expensive Full HD phone such as the HTC One M8 of course, which has almost double the 233 pixels per inch on offer here.

But again, as a cheap handset, perhaps your extra phone for work or a child's first smartphone, it's easily good enough.

Perhaps the nearest rival is the Sony Xperia E3 with a larger, 4.5 inch screen but a slightly lower pixel density as a result, However the Sony's IPS screen is superior overall and features shatter proof glass.

Samsung Galaxy Ace 3, again...

Samsung haven't really changed anything else from the Ace 3 beyond the addition of 4G, the slightly larger processor and increase in RAM memory size. The screen is the same size, the casing is even the same with nothing to distinguish it from the Ace 3.

That means the same rounded corners and physical home button as seen across much of Samsung's range. The silver coloured trim around the perimeter remains too.

Good camera with decent feature set

The same 5 megapixel camera is here with an LED flash, autofocus and plenty of other features including face and smile detection, panoramic mode and geo-tagging. It also records 720p HD video at 30 frames per second, and there is a secondary front facing "selfie" camera here too.

Extensive features for a basic handset

Other features are more than reasonable for a budget phone, including GPS for sat nav, a stereo FM radio, and the latest version of Android, v4.4.2 (KitKat).

But we especially like the Swype keyboard which allows you to trace out the letters to form your words without lifting your finger, so getting rid of the need to type each letter individually. It works well too, and predicts the word you are typing to good effect.

Stereo Bluetooth is also included or you can add your favourite wired headset via the 3.5mm headphone socket. You can store your tunes or photos on a memory card as the Ace 4 accepts cards up to 64GB, which is always a useful feature.

Our summary

If you are looking for a basic, entry level android handset then the Samsung has plenty going for it. It is however, rather expensive for what it is. The Xperia E3 is considerably cheaper and, we think, a better phone overall.

If you're really looking for a decent starter phone at a very decent price you really should look no further than the Nokia Lumia 530, which, apart from the absence of a front facing camera has similar or better specs than the Samsung Galaxy Ace 4.

The Nokia is faster and smoother, superior build quality and has a better, less resource hungry operating system in Windows Phone. But most important, especially for those of you on a budget, at the time of writing it costs almost half the price.

There isn't a lot wrong with the Samsung but you can get more for your money and we recommend you take a look at these other options before you decide to buy

Current prices on PAYG (EE Network)
Samsung Galaxy Ace 4 - £119.99
Sony Xperia E3 - £89.99
Nokia Lumia 530 - £59.99
