The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 hasn't changed an awful lot from the Note 3, but what has changed makes a dramatic improvement.

The first of two main changes of note - no pun intended - sees the screen uprated to a stunning Quad HD display, only the second mainstream device to feature such a screen after the LG G3, but probably a sure sign that the rest will follow soon enough.

When is a tablet not a tablet?

The second change isn't on the phone itself but is a vast improvement to the S-Pen digital stylus. Phone? Isn't the Note considered to be a tablet? Well three years ago the original Galaxy Note probably was, and that came in a 5.1 inches.

The daft name "phablet" was introduced in some quarters to help blur the lines between phone and tablet.

The LG G3 comes in at 5.5 inches and is considered to be a phone, as is of course the 5.5 inch iPhone 6 Plus, while there is a wealth of phones within the 5 to 6 inch range, including the Sony Xperia Z3 at 5.2 inches. Confused? Well Samsung have chosen to hold the Note 4's screen size at 5.7 inches, the same as the Note 3

Premium metal framed case

The other obvious difference is in the feel of the casing itself. It finally feels like a premium device thanks to the metal frame, with Samsung finally waking up to the constant criticism of the cheap plastic finish of almost all of their previous handsets.

The trend had already been broken with the aluminium framed Galaxy Alpha and it has now rightly been transferred to the new Note and it feels very solid as a result.

Sadly the fake leather rear cover remains, and we think it spoils and cheapens the whole effect. At this price it would not be unreasonable to expect a real leather panel but if we're not going to get that why spoil it with a plastic faux lookalike? It's an effect that has never worked for us.

The one thing of note on the back is the heart rate monitor, which doubles as a camera trigger and is perfect when using the front facing 'selfie' camera.

Stunning screen, possibly the best you can get

The star of the show is undoubtedly the 515 pixel per inch Quad HD screen, which is simply sensational. Samsung's Super AMOLED screen means that colours are bright and vibrant, without the over saturated vivid displays of earlier models.

With 515 pixels per inch this is quite possibly the best screen on the market today, but at well over £600 it is one of the most expensive too. The iPhone 6 Plus of course also costs over £600, while the 128GB version will leave you almost £800 light. That phone doesn't include a Quad HD screen or support for a digital pen.

New improved digital pen

The digital pen - Samsung's S-Pen - has been overhauled and now feels like a real pen to write with, whilst you can also write with it as you would with a fountain pen in handwriting mode. It looks uncannily realistic, and has a real handwriting feel to it when you are using it.

Amongst many other functions, including resizing windows, we also like the selection mode which works via a button on the side of the pen. This allows you to easily select, copy and paste text.

Outstanding 16MP camera

The camera has been upgraded from 12 to 16 megapixels but more importantly the size of the sensor has been increased and now allows 60% more light in for better pictures in lower light situations.

Optical image stabilisation is included as is a wealth of other features, including simultaneous HD video and image recording, 120 degree wide angle lens on the 3.7 megapixel selfie camera, which also records 1080p Full HD video at 30 frames per second, while the main camera offers Quad HD 2160p video recording as well as dual video recording.

Face and smile detection, HDR, panoramic, touch to focus and all present and correct.

Piles of power and storage

A power unit comprising of a Qualcomm Snapdragon 2.7 GHz quad core processor is quoted, although some markets will get two separate processors, one running at 1.3 GHz with the other offering up 1.9 GHz. Either way you will have more power than you will ever need.

3GB of RAM memory ensures everything runs smoothly with no lag no matter how hard you push it, while a very generous 32GB of internal storage is backed up with 50GB of free online Dropbox storage space. If you are still hungry for more you can add a memory card right up to 128GB.

Connect to everything, everywhere

Every connectivity feature you will ever need is here too, with the latest version of stereo Bluetooth, v4.1, with Enhanced data Rate and low energy requirements, while NFC, and DLNA are here too.

You can even use your Note 4 as a TV remote control with infra-red included, while assisted GPS also includes GLONASS support, connecting you to Russia's demilitarised satellite system. Wi-Fi covers every available band with Wi-Fi direct and Wi-Fi hotspot also included to ensure you stay connected just about anywhere.

A swathe of sensors

An array of sensors includes an accelerometer for screen rotation, barometer, gyro, compass, proximity sensor and gesture sensor, this being Samsung's Air Gesture mode whereby you can select items by simply waving your hand across the screen without actually touching it.

Most interesting, if not universally useful, are the SpO2 sensor which measures the amount of oxygen in your blood, and the UV sensor which basically tells you if it safe to go out in the sun or it is is too strong.

This 4G handset runs the latest version of Android v4.4.2 'KitKat'
, and comes in black, white, gold and pink.

Our summary

This is without a doubt one of the largest and most feature packed phones you can buy, and the standout points are the S-Pen digital stylus functionality which you will find genuinely useful, and the Quad HD screen. There is little to fault on it but for us, particularly on a smartphone at this price the faux leather rear cover is almost laughable. If you can forgive it and afford it then those standout features mentioned put the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 in a class of it's own.
