Announced in a blaze of publicity, the Samsung Galaxy S3 was widely touted as the iPhone killer by some sections of the media when it was introduced. Of course it was up against the iPhone 4s so it was some claim!
Here at 1st Mobile Towers we prefer to view it as an iPhone alternative. After all, the vast majority of people seems to be split into two groups - those who want an iPhone and those who don't. If you don't then the Samsung Galaxy S3 is a superb android-powered alternative.
Supersize, superbright screen
This is of course the replacement for it's predecessor, the incredibly successful Samsung Galaxy S2. The good news is it won't disappoint you. The (very) large 4.8 inch Super AMOLED screen is bright, vivid and, well, large!
This means it's perfect for watching videos - even in HD - or viewing web pages or photographs and the 1028 x 720 screen looks fantastic at any angle. This is a real handful of a handset though.
HD Video recording camera
The camera is the same 8 megapixel affair that was seen on the Samsung Galaxy S2 but that's no disappointment - it is an excellent camera which also records 1080p HD video. Videocalling is available through a front-facing camera which has a host of features of it's own.
It can record 720p HD video and take a picture at the same time and it can also sense your eye movement to turn off the screen if you are not looking at it. It sounds a little gimmicky but it works and is certainly impressive in use.
Samsung's own 1.4 GHz quad core processor ensures superfast speeds whether you are multitasking or playing games and smooth scrolling and rendering on web pages.
Gorilla Glass 4.8 inch screen
Many of you may be surprised that Samsung have opted for a plastic construction compared with the iPhone's metal and glass casing but it certainly looks the part and the glossy rear cover is surprisingly scratch resistant.
The strong Gorilla Glass 2 screen will present no problems either. Our only complaint is the large 4.8 inch screen leaves little room for the touch sensitive buttons beneath but in practice you will not need to use them much in any event.
The 720 x 1280 pixel screen offers a resolution of just over 300 pixels per inch so your text and photos will look pin sharp, while the vivid colours of the Galaxy S2, often criticised because it was TOO vivid, have been toned down here. It's good to see a major manufacturer not resting on it's laurels and responding positively to their customers observations.
Replaceable battery and memory card
Beneath the cover you will find a 2100 mAh replaceable battery and MicroSD card slot which can take memory cards up to 64GB so you will not be short on memory space. Internal storage is also offered in versions up to 64GB, but the 16GB is likely to be the one on offer in the UK to try to keep the cost of an already expensive handset down.
Connectivity includes Wi-Fi, USB, stereo Bluetooth, NFC and DLNA - in other words everything you could possibly need.
In our opinion the Samsung Galaxy S3 does an awful lot to live up to the hype as a superb alternative to the iPhone 4s. Some might find the Super AMOLED screen a little too vivid and the sheer physical size of the phone a little too much.
Yet we have no doubt that it will delight those of you who choose to buy. Samsung have done a great job with their latest challenge to be king of the smartphones and it's a handset we are happy to recommend.
