Those of you who have read our admittedly rave review of the Sony Xperia Z1 knows just how highly we rated that phone, so apart from the reduction in screen size from 5 inches to 4.3 inches is there a lot of difference between the two?
Well thankfully the answer is no, with the internals of the two handsets, along with the gargantuan Sony Xperia Z Ultra, being on a par
Very powerful processor
That means you get the full 16GB of storage space, 2GB RAM and that hugely powerful 2.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon quad-core processor. You also get the aluminium casing sandwiched between two layers of scratch resistant tempered glass.
This contains the amazing 20.7 megapixel camera which uses the same technology as Sony use in their compact cameras, and dust ingress and water resistance up to 1.5 meters in fresh water for up to 30 minutes.
The impressive connectivity suite is here too, with dual band Wi-Fi, stereo Bluetooth, DLNA, Wi-Fi hotspot, Wi-Fi Direct and Assisted GPS for satellite navigation and geotagging as well as NFC for contactless payments.
Smaller screen still shines
Back to that screen then, and here's the only real difference. With a size of 720 x 1280 pixels you only get 720p HD instead of the full 1080p. It hardly matters much on the smaller screen, in fact the 342 pixels per inch density is BETTER than the iPhone 5s.
So if you are in any doubt as to the difference you will encounter it is effectively negligible, and on a 4.3 inch screen you will certainly not notice any difference in the real world to your viewing pleasure. Looking at the screen side by side with the Sony Xperia Z1, we honestly could not see any discernible difference between the two apart from the obvious smaller screen of the Z1 compact
It's also worth noting that this one is available in pink and lime green as well as black and white (subject to UK network availability)
The only other thing of note is that the Z1 Compact is a full 1mm thicker at 9.5mm, no doubt necessary to squeeze in the same hardware into a smaller overall casing. Overall then, it is simply down to whether you prefer a 4.3 inch screen or a 5 inch one. There is really nothing more to it than that and as with the Z1 we can thoroughly recommend this superb Sony handset.
