We raved about the superb Sony Xperia Z, then we were blown away with the Z1 which has only been on the shelves for five minutes it seems. So have Sony managed the near-impossible and topped it all over again with the Xperia Z2? Let’s take a look

The Sony Xperia Z2 has in fact arrived on the scene just five months after the Xperia Z1, so what has changed?
We were very happy with the screens on the Z and Z1 but this time Sony have switched to an IPS LCD display which is brighter still.
If there is a downside it's that the screens on the previous Z models now look a little faded if placed alongside the Z2. Given the excellence of the previous screens it's a remarkable achievement in it's own way, but in another way it simply looks as if the brightness has been ramped up.
This will make it easier to see outdoors if you are looking for an obvious benefit. Sony have achieved this by utilising what they call Live Colour LED technology. Colours do indeed look brighter, but not so much that they are almost too vividly bright as was the case with some of the Samsung Galaxy S range.
Same old...? Nope - now with UHD video!
The fantastic 20.7 megapixel camera seen in the Z1 remains as expected. In some quarters it has been reported that the camera struggled in low light on the Z1 but it's not a problem we were able to reproduce and again we saw no problems here.
We feel that there is little to improve here, but Sony have managed it anyway with video now recorded in 4K Ultra high definition, which is four times sharper than HD.
However you will need a 4K TV to view your videos in their full glory, which at the moment is going to set you back the best part of three grand. Before you rush off to spend it, it is worth bearing in mind that there are very, very few programmes or movies yet to be made in 4K UHD.
Even more power!
Processing power has been ramped up slightly, with the New Qualcomm 801 quad-core processor now running at 2.3 GHz. There really isn't any need for any more - I still have a not-too old Dell desktop computer that is no more powerful than this stunning smartphone.
Still, Sony have seen fit to ramp up the RAM up to 3 GB so if you didn't have enough power on tap before with the Z1, you most certainly do now!
There is no denying that Sony have produced yet another stunner with the Xperia Z2. The question really though has to be "Why"? It has a slightly larger, slightly brighter screen but it is definitely not to be considered as an upgrade from the Z1, a phone that you are likely to have only had for a few months anyway.
Unless you have really deep pockets it's probably not going to interest you then unless you want to upgrade from the original Xperia Z, but even then most of you will be asking if there is a big enough difference to justify digging into those pockets once again for the latest kit - and we would say perhaps not.
If you don't have a phone from the Sony Xperia Z range yet though and are looking to upgrade to the latest flagship smartphone, then what are you waiting for? It truly is an improvement on what was already a phenomenal phone.
Once again Sony get top marks from us for a truly remarkable piece of kit. If we have one reservation it is that 5.2 inches of screen is bordering on just a little too big for a mobile phone in our view, but if it's what you want this is the best smartphone in the UK today
